My journalism and television production training has given me essential industry placement skills. The documentaries
I have made, demonstrate that I can produce lively, entertaining and relevant news programmes. While making documentaries
at the NZ Broadcasting School, I found that network current affairs programmes were broadcasting similar topics to those I
was making as part of my course, which indicates that I’m on the right track. I have a good nose for identifying important
stories. In early 2005, I chose to produce my major television documentary project on the potential threat of the H5N1 virus
(or bird flu) outbreak and investigate New Zealand’s pandemic action plan (currently in post–production).
I am skilled in many areas of radio and television journalism including writing and reading news, producing
radio packages and leading regional television news items with national appeal. I have made four current affairs
television documentaries, received good grades and have developed the ability to become a persistent investigator. I love
interviewing people from all social backgrounds and enjoy asking probing questions and can identify follow up questions from
the answers given. I enjoy asking challenging questions that some journalists shy away from.
I also possess an artistic and creative background essential for TV Production. In 2004, I facilitated the
‘creative team’ of students and was directly involved in producing the overall ‘on–air’ presentation
of the student news programme and co–produced the theme music which has been used again this year by journalism students
& broadcast on regional television. My TV production skills complement my journalism training and combined, make me a
strong candidate for a successful internship.
